Just so his history is clear, Imi was never imprisoned at Atlit. His journey to Israel and ha'pala, or aliyah bet (illegal entry into British Palestine) can be found here: http://www.kravmagafederation.com/Imi-Lichtenfeld.html
Hela Mizrachi, Rhon's mother, was detained here. She is a Holocaust Survivor, born in Poland, who was smuggled alone out of the Warsaw ghetto at the age of six. She was re-united with her mother and younger brother outside of the city; she never saw her father again.
I am waiting for the story of Hela's survival of the Nazis to be transcribed to paper. When it is, she has given me the honor of sharing her story with Rhon's students; I am planning on using this forum to do so.
During my last visit to Israel I spent a day in Atlit. Hela told us the stories of detention life there, of the other people imprisioned, and shared with us her memories of her time there; the text above (although difficult to read) gives a very brief description of the camp itself.
I am gathering my photos of this visit, and will post them here as soon as I am finished. |

WoW, so who's considering going? Was just talking about poland and found out five of my girlfriends relatives where in camps near the end of the war, and was blown away hearing how close it came to never knowing this woman. Two survived, the happiest smiling old woman I've ever met, her grandmother. Four lifetimes of wisdom packed into one little ol' lady, and a love for for life that kicks me in the head whenever we get together.
I received an email today about this trip. Although I've not been a KMF student for yrs 'yet' -We both attend school in brklyn and those who know me know it's changed my life 10 fold. I've always wanted to visit Israel, and if I can cash in enough change jars in the house. Sounds like quite an experience to me. Would like to see the roots of this thing that's given me much. It makes sense crystal clear. Fingers crossed. Any other trips in the future? Heck I vacation once a decade, I'm due to step outside this city. _________________ Respect. |
